Description
'Sandeman' - Black and White Photograph by Menega Sabidussi.
Capture of the beautiful company building of the Sandeman port wine in Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto, Portugal, with the iconic Sandeman silhouette logo on the roof. While it is a matter of taste which port one prefers, there is no arguing with the success of this icon branding. In 1928 the artist George Massiot Brown approached Sandeman for business. Sandeman requested some designs for posters, and the remarkable silhouette of the Don, dressed like the Spanish caballeros in a Portuguese student's cape and wide-brimmed hat, was born and today is recognized the world over.
Port wine (also known as Vinho do Porto) is a Portuguese fortified wine produced exclusively in the Douro Valley in the northern provinces of Portugal. The wine is then stored and aged, often in barrels stored in a cave (pronounced kahv and meaning "cellar" in Portuguese) in Vila Nova de Gaia (in Porto on the south bank of the river Douro), before being bottled.
