Description
This chapel in the woods is the 5th of the stations of the way of the cross on the Holy Hill in Mikulov (Nikolsburg), Czech Republik. It is hewn into the rock which squeezes the whitewashed walls from the sides and the top. This part of the path up the hill is very woody and the trees hug the rocks and chapel.
The Holy Hill has always been a special place, a place of pilgrimage since the 16th century revered by people of the Catholic faith, it was a place of worship and celebration already in ancient times. Originally this hill was called Tanzberg (the Dancing Hill). Legend has it that the name comes from dance rites associated with pagan fertility and vegetation cults. Other legends say that witches danced here during covens on Walpurgis night.
The image this digital painting is derived from was taken on a very foggy, very quiet All Saints Day (All Hallows, November 1st) a time equally important in pagan times as it is to Catholics today. How fitting for this magical place.
I created this picture using a mix of styles befitting the many layered meanings of the site. The closer you look, the more you will find to enjoy.
