Mercury, the Winged Messenger, represents communication, thought processes and mobility. The Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn) are the initiators of change in the zodiac. Mercury in Cancer, the Cardinal Water sign, is the defensive reactor, very quick to circle the wagons when threatened and protective and makes snap decisions based on intuition, moods and feelings, less on facts, although his is the mind that soaks and retains information like a sponge. He listens sensitively to where the mood swings and is a highly effective speaker able to move and sway emotions but becomes "crabby" and withdraws instantly into his shell when touched in a perceived raw spot.
